Junior round-up: Billingham Bears had a convincing 9-0 win in English Junior (U16) North A League over visiting Altrincham Jets at Forum Ice Arena, the result never in any doubt after an opening period which saw Bears take a 7-0 led.

Robert Dowd gave Billingham the lead after only 20 seconds. Michael Farn (2), Dowd, Paul Smith and Liam Telfer put the home side 6-0 ahead at 10.50. Telfer received his marching orders 63 seconds later on a match penalty for kicking. James Udell struck a seventh a minute from the first interval.

Smith and Down's hat-trick marker a goal in each of the remaining periods completed the scoring.

Bears' Steve Pritchard received a match penalty for slashing at 43.46. Udell and Jets' Stephen Taylor were handed ten minute misconducts two minutes earlier.

In Under-16s North B League Sunderland Arrows had their second victory from an 8-0 win at Flintshire. Ben Condon gave Arrows the lead in the second minute.

Shane Hewitt hit a second after ten minutes. Jamie Smithson and Condon doubled the lead during the middle period.

Shane Hewitt (2) and Jeremy Lundin were on target with three goals in as many minutes to go 7-0 at 35.52. Callum Hewitt completed the scoring in the 41st minute. Arrows' netminders Mark Lee and Jason Moses faced nine shots in a shut out.

Whitley Bay Mohawks picked up two very valuable points in English Under-14 North A League follows a 3-2 win at Blackburn Kestrels. the only goal of the opening period was scored through Mark Nicholson with Mohawks short-handed.

Blackburn went 2-1 ahead by 32.09 with two goals in three minutes. Within 30 seconds Nicholson's second goal of the game had tied the scored. The game looked to be heading for a draw until Nathan Taylor converted a powerplay with 32 seconds remaining.

Sunderland Cherokees gained their second English Under-12 North A League victory of the season at Altrincham Spitfires. Nathan Salem got his side off to a good start putting Cherokees ahead at 04.57. Altrincham drew level with a deserved equaliser in the 12th minute.

Cherokees restored their lead when short-handed through Salem at 28.12 and five minutes later Salem's hat trick marker made it 3-1. Spitfire's cut the deficit in the final minute but there was still time for Grant Sharp to strike home a fourth Cherokees goal.

In the same division Whitley Bay Arrows went down 21-1 to Nottingham Tiger Cubs in the Lacy City. Callum Watson scoring Whitley's consolation goal.

Billingham Pumas were in Under-12 North B action at Birmingham Rockets. Jonathan Galloway scored for Pumas at 03.26 and doubled the lead at 20.05. Rockets drew level only for Pumas to 60 6-2 ahead at 32.25 which included Galloway's hat trick marker. Rockets scored twice more to make final score 6-4 in Puma's favous.

Whitley Bay Mischiefs in an Under-10 Challenge match at Hillheads against Kingston River Rats lost 6-4, Adam Perrie (2), Sam Towner and Harry Harley scored for Mischiefs.

English National Hockey League North

Billingham Bombers first home match of the season with a refurbished ice arena and renamed team will be tomorrow when Whitley Warriors are the visitors (face off 6.30pm). Two Bombers home games had been cancelled due to the improvements not being completed.

Bombers two road game so far have brought them maximum points with wins at Grimsby Buffaloes (6-1) and Altrincham Aces (4-2). Warriors meanwhile have played six winning three and losing three in league fixtures and a loss in English Premier League Cup.

Warriors host Kingston Jets in EPL Cup Action on Sunday in the second game this weekend. Last week Bombers were comfortable winners at Grimsby. Simon Hehr gave them a first period lead and Andy Thornton (2), Paul Windridge and Andy Fletcher made it 5-0 by the second interval. Fletcher bagged his second in the 50th minute.

Netminder Michael Snook was beaten at 57.36 for Grimsby's consolation goal.

Sunderland Chiefs won for the first time this season with an 11-4 win at Bradford Buffaloes. Both teams were without a point prior to this game. Bulldogs went ahead before Shaun Black, Richard Danskin and Paul Rolfe eased Chiefs 3-1 ahead at the first break.

Jonathan Huntley (2), Matthew Chapman and Rolfe struck in the middle period with Chiefs well in command. Michael Atkinson, Jonathan Heslop, Kevin Muster and Black scored in the third period.

Whitley Warriors have not won in four matches after two losses last weekend. On Sunday Warriors were beaten 8-4 away to League leaders Sheffield Scimtars. Whitley trailed 0-1 at 19.25 and goals from Darren Taylor, Lee Baxter and Paul Graham gave them a 3-1 lead at 28.29.

Sheffield hit back to go 4-3 ahead before Kevin Bucas equalised in the 46th minute. Scimtars took advantage of their powerplays and added a further four.

The previous night Whitley lost 6-1 at home to Peterborough Phantoms in Premier League cup. Andrew Carter scoring the lone reply.
