FATHER and son Kevin and Michael Melton have taken over the reins at a popular village pub.
This is their first experience as landlords and after a week pulling pints at the Bay Horse in Hurworth, they admit it is very hard work.
However, for 22-year old Kevin, who has worked behind a bar for almost five years, it is a dream come true.
"I've worked in pubs since I was 18 and I love it," he told the D&S Times.
"I have always wanted to run my own pub and although it is very hard work and long hours we are both taking it in our stride."
The family, including Mrs Susan Melton, who now runs the Country Tea Shop in Staindrop, returned to the area from Berkshire after leaving Darlington 11 years ago.
Kevin is sure their decision was the right one to take. "We are very happy with the pub and the village and everybody has been very welcoming.
"The only changes we are going to make will be to expand the food side."
The Meltons take over from Mike and Margaret Henderson, who ran the busy pub for eight years and made many friends in the village.
They plan to move abroad, relax a while and perhaps take work as relief bar managers.
