AGGRESSION management expert Owen Murray has set up a training consultancy to help combat escalating violence in the workplace.

Sure Safe, in South Hylton, Sunderland, is designed to help deal with incidents of verbal and physical abuse at work.

It is one of the latest new enterprises to be helped by the North-East of England Business and Innovation Centre (BIC) at Sunderland Enterprise Park.

The courses run by Mr Murray, a karate black belt and fifth dan, teach breakaway and restraining techniques to help diffuse situations.

The 51-year-old, who lost his left hand in a printing accident when he was 20, captained the Sunderland karate team that won the national championships in 1991.

He was also part of the British team that took two gold medals at the European championships in the 1980s.

Mr Murray said: "The courses I offer train staff to communicate and de-escalate potential serious situations, and to develop confidence and skills to break away and escape from physical attack.
