YOUNG artists were rewarded for their efforts with a tour of a railway station.

Seven youngsters from St Albans RC Primary School in Walker, Newcastle, were taken on a tour of Newcastle Central Station after winning a school poster competition.

It was aimed at promoting rail safety and asked them to come up with ideas and then incorporate them into pieces of art.

During the tour, on Wednesday, a GNER member of staff told the children about the safety measures in operation and potential dangers on the railway.

Kevin Egan, a health and safety representative in GNER's Newcastle telesales centre, said: "Anything we can do to drive home to children and their families and friends the importance of safety at or near the railway may help to prevent further harm or loss of life.
