IMPROVEMENTS to a bridge carrying the A167 over the East Coast rail line on the outskirts of Durham will not be finished before mid-December.
Work began on the Nevilles Cross Railway Bridge on Monday, October 7.New barriers are being installed to protect the parapets, while improvements are being made to the deck waterproofing on the bridge.
Andrew Vigrass, project sponsor for the Highways Agency, said a routine inspection revealed that the brick parapets did not meet latest safety standards.
"We are undertaking the works to bring the bridge up to those standards. While the works are in place we are taking the opportunity to improve the waterproofing of the bridge to prevent deterioration of the structure."
He said it would be necessary, at times, to restrict traffic on the A167 Newcastle Road to one lane through the works.
