REDCAR stages a seven-race programme today, with racing scheduled to begin at 1.35.

The longest race on the card is The Weatherbys IT Services Handicap Stakes over one mile and three quarters, while the European Breeders Fund support The Pickering Maiden Fillies' Stakes.

The Keith Haykin 'Lifetime in Racing' Maiden Stakes is one of a series of races organised by Racing Welfare in recognition of stable staff who have given a lifetime to the sport.

Mr Haykin, aged 69, lives in Bishop Auckland, where he was born and went to school. He joined the local yard of trainer Denys Smith in 1961 and was travelling head lad for many years until he became a racecourse security officer in 1989.

During his time with Mr Smith the stable had a great deal of success with horses such as Foggy Bell, Quayside, Royal Prerogative and the 1968 Grand National winner, Red Alligator.
