Kevin Phillips had a second half 'goal' disallowed for offside, while Niall Quinn hit the inside of a post.
Sunderland were lacking in creativity and would have suffered a heavier defeat had it not been for a handful of good saves from third choice goalkeeper Jurgen Macho.
