A FUNDRAISING drive to redevelop a market town's community hall has been given a cash boost by three local organisations.

The Witham Hall, in Barnard Castle, is one of the town's best known buildings, but the 19th Century hall is in urgent need of refurbishment and the cost of the work has been estimated at millions of pounds.

The latest donation to the Witham Hall Redevelopment Appeal of more than £400 has come from the Barnard Castle Townswomen's Guild, the Ladies' section of Barnard Castle Golf Club and Startforth Monday Bridge Club, which donated funds raised from a recent competition.

Extra funding has been raised through charity events and donations from the public, and members of the fundraising committee are confident they can reach their target of £3.5m.

A £30,000 feasibility study has already been carried out, and the public's response was strongly in favour of improving facilities at the Grade II listed building.

The fundraising committee hopes to launch a national appeal in 2004, but it is still desperate for local support.

The funds will pay for the refurbishment and an extension, as well as providing access and new toilets for disabled people. The scheme will also create a computer centre and theatre at the hall, which will be available to local residents and theatre groups.

Elizabeth Conran, chairman of the Witham Hall fundraising sub-committee, said: "We are delighted to have received these donations.

"The donations themselves are a great help, and we are especially pleased that so many people have contributed.

"Evidence of community support is vital when applying to grant organisations outside the area.

"All donations from the community have a double value."
