POLICE are appealing for information on the events leading to a crash which has left a man critically ill for a week.
Colvin Hayton, 33, of The Larches, Esh Winning, near Durham, was driving near Ushaw College Farm, Durham, when his Alpha Romeo left the road at about 1.30am last Friday. It crashed into a metal fence before hitting a metal gate post, which scythed the car into three pieces.
Mr Hayton was found lying unconscious in the road by a passing off-duty police officer and later had both legs amputated in the University Hospital of North Durham.
He has since been transferred to Middlesbrough General Hospital, where he has undergone further operations, but has yet to regain consciousness. His condition was yesterday described as critical but stable.
PC David Beverley, of Durham Constabulary's accident investigation unit, said Mr Hayton was believed to have been socialising in Durham prior to the accident.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the police on 0191-386 4929.
