BOWLS clubs in Ferryhill are to launch a recruitment drive because of dwindling membership.

At their end-of-season liaison meeting, teams belonging to both Dean Bank and Mainsforth clubs reported that they were struggling for members.

Ferryhill Town Council executive officer Jamie Corrigan said: "Both clubs are suffering from a loss of members because they're getting older. There's not enough younger people coming through."

Mr Corrigan said: "I'm planning on having discussions with clerks from around the country who operate bowls clubs to ask if they've suffered from a drop in the same way as we have."
