A CAMPAIGN by residents to create a new community facility came to fruition this week with the opening of a portable building.
The ceremony marked the end of a year's fundraising by the Terraces Association, formed by people living in King Edward Terrace and Margaret Terrace, Tanfield Lea, near Stanley.
The centre, in which a children's club, bingo evenings, coffee mornings and other events will be held, was opened by Derwentside District Council leader Councillor Alex Watson.
Terraces Association vice-chairman and independent district councillor Betty Minto praised residents for their efforts.
She said: "They wanted to improve their lot and felt they had been forgotten so decided to take matters into hand and do something about it.
"They have worked very hard to achieve their goal."
Councillor Minto worked with the residents after they formed the Terraces Association.
She thanked district council works supervisor Gordon Palmer for his help and praised the leadership of association chairwoman Monica Teasdale.
The Kiddies Club meets on Monday and Wednesday. For details call Coun Minto, on (01207) 299756.
