ALAN Shearer's 300th career club goal was scant consolation as Newcastle geared up for Wednesday's crucial Champions League match at home to Juventus in the worst possible manner.
The game appeared over after just nine minutes as Blackburn went two up with David Dunn converting a penalty after Nikos Dabizas had handled in the box to receive his marching orders.
Dunn then struck again and with the Magpies down to ten men all hope seemed lost.
But Shearer converted from the spot for number 300 then early in the second-half number 301 with a trademark header appeared to put the visitors back in it.
Blackburn however had other ideas and after former Darlington loan star Martin Taylor had put the home side back in front, an Andy Griffin own goal and a Taylor second ensured that any celebrations for Shearer's achievements would have to be put on hold.
