THE voyages of Captain James Cook were brought to life on Teesside yesterday.

Using a sextant, similar to the one the 18th Century explorer would have used on his voyages of discovery, museum curator Ian Stubbs and education officer Claire Pounder sized up preparations for the Captain Cook Festival, which starts in earnest today.

The festival features a week-long programme of music, with performers from Canada, the Punjab, Africa, the US and France, as well as a real ale festival and family activities.

It culminates in a service of thanksgiving for Cook's life next Sunday, at which a message from the Queen will be read. There will also be a costume cavalcade and the cutting of a birthday cake.

Ian and Claire are based at the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum in Stewart Park, Middlesbrough, which will be at the centre of celebrations marking the 274th anniversary of Cook's birth.
