One of the victims of the Bali terrorist atrocity was a former pupil at one of the oldest public schools in the country, it emerged yesterday.

Clive Walton, who was 33, was one of more than 180 killed when the packed Sari nightclub was blown to pieces. A Hong Kong-based executive, he was a former pupil of St Peter's School in York and was in Bali as the captain of ex-pat team the Vandals for a rugby union ten-a-side tournament.

Schoolmate and fellow school rugby team member Kevin Price, 33, said friends were devastated by the news _ which came as plans for a reunion of former pupils next month were almost complete.

He said Clive, a father-of-two, was well known as a keen rugby player as well as a successful swimmer and athlete at the school.

He described him as a colourful, confident and charismatic man who loved to play practical jokes.

"I remember at school he changed houses from Alcuin to Wentworth and we were all quite pleased because he was so good at sport," he said.

"It is so sad because we were just starting to organise reunions again - and he was doing so well with his family, career and social life."

Kevin and Clive boarded at St Peter's for eight years from age ten before they both moved to Newcastle to study for degrees.

The two men had planned a reunion for themselves and other school friends next month, at the England versus New Zealand rugby international in London.

Paddy Stephens, a senior housemaster at St Peter's who coached Clive, said today he was a "loveable rogue".

"He was a grand lad who could put his hand to any sports," he said. "He was a very memorable boy who kept his contact with the school. Rugby was his first love."
