A NEW scheme has been launched to encourage people to get on their bikes.

The 'Pedal 2 Work' project has been set up for people throughout Hambleton and Richmondshire. The scheme loans bicycles out to those facing transport problems.

To qualify, cyclists must be over the age of 16 and require transport to get to work, training or further education. The bikes are provided for up to one year and safety equipment is included.

The scheme will run alongside the successful 'Wheels 2 work' moped loan project. The 12 new bikes are mountain bikes, with 21 gears to help with hills. Each one comes with lights, locks, luggage rack and a puncture repair kit.

Andrew Johnston, scheme co-ordinator, said: "It is an excellent way of getting about for people who have shorter distances to travel and so do not qualify for a moped.

"Those living on the peripheries of towns or those wishing to gain access to industrial estates on the outskirts of our market towns will be eligible to apply for a bike."

Both the bicycle and moped projects are managed by the Northallerton Voluntary Service Association. To find out more visit www.communigate.co.uk/ ne/wheels2work or call (01609) 761682.
