CORPORATE law specialist Karen Simms has won a business award.

Karen, from Sedgefield, is a partner in law practice Sinton & Co and has won the Prince's Trust North East mentor of the Year award for her work with aspiring musician Laura Reid.

She will now attend the national awards dinner in London on November 13, where she will be up against 11 other regional finalists.

Karen has been mentoring Laura for two years. Laura, from Heaton, Newcastle, is a professional musician and when she embarked on her career she decided to seek advice.

She was introduced to Karen at Sintons and has received free legal consultation and tips on contracts, website exposure, business planning, tax and copyright law. Laura has played on a number of albums and has received glowing reviews in the national press. She has also taught the cello.

Among her other interests are helping people with disabilities and she has already run workshops for disabled people using music technology for The Drake Music Project
