A SPECIALITY market is to be established in a town.
The monthly market in Guisborough's Westgate is expected to offer such delicacies as Yorkshire Punch, smoked trout, game pies and quail from about 20 to 30 traders coming from Tyneside to Yorkshire.
Demand for a market was identified in a survey completed by the Guisborough Market Town Initiative and the idea has received backing from Lord Gisborough, Guisborough Town Council and Guisborough Town Pride.
Catherine Hall, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's head of environment strategy, said: "These sorts of markets bring the food producers closer to the food consumer and so, in today's environmental jargon, reduce the food miles."
The first market will be held on Saturday, December 7. Redcar Town Centre manager John Partridge will monitor the project with a view to extending it to Redcar.
