CYCLE lights and data tags were on offer from police officers in South Bank at the weekend in an initiative to encourage cycle safety.

Three primary schools have taken part in a cycle safety poster campaign, with 12 winners receiving free lights and data tags. Another 30 packs were on offer to the public.

The scheme was devised by South Bank community police team and Steve McCabe, victim witness support worker for South Bank, with funding from the Single Regeneration Budget.

PC Chris Gunnell said: "It is amazing how many people put their lives at risk by taking to the roads on cycles without lights at dusk or dawn and even during the night. To coincide with the nights drawing in, from November 1 to March 31, next year, we will be enforcing pedal cycle safety. Anyone found riding a bike without lights or riding on pavements will be targeted."
