WINTER hampers are to be distributed to elderly people in Spennymoor as part of Make a Difference Day.

Spennymoor Borough Volunteer Bureau has teamed up with Age Concern Durham County and the Salvation Army to provide the hampers.

Organised by the national charity Community Service Volunteers, the Make a Difference Day event is now in its seventh year.

It is aimed at encouraging people everywhere to think about how they can support their communities and make a difference to the lives of other people.

The groups are looking for volunteers to make donations towards the hampers.

Bureau co-ordinator Sharon Vasey said: "We need donations from individuals or community groups to make up the hampers.

"We are looking to include items such as tins of soup, packets of rice or pasta, tea, coffee and hot chocolate.

"These can be stored and are especially warming on cold winter days, when elderly people may not feel up to going shopping.

"The hampers will be distributed around Spennymoor with the help of the Salvation Army."

Donations can be left at Spennymoor Community Learning on Friday, between 10am and 1pm, where staff from the bureau and Age Concern will also be available to offer advice about volunteering and preparing for the winter.
