SIR BOBBY ROBSON is setting his stall out for a famous victory over Juventus to rescue Newcastle United's Champions' League campaign.
Robson insists that tonight's sell-out Group E clash at St. James' Park represents his side's "last chance'' to maintain an interest in Europe's elite club competition.
Defeat for United, who have yet to register a point or a goal after three rounds of matches, would spell the end if there is a decisive outcome in the Dynamo Kiev-Feyenoord encounter.
And even if the Magpies draw with group leaders Juventus, who beat them 2-0 in Turin three weeks ago, a win for Feyenoord would eliminate Robson's men and still leave them struggling to overhaul Dynamo for the third place UEFA Cup berth.
United's bid to overturn the formbook against a Juventus side unbeaten in nine games in all competitions this season, had already been hit by the loss of striker Craig Bellamy and defender Nikos Dabizas through suspension.
But Robson yesterday admitted that Kieron Dyer, who missed Saturday's 5-2 defeat at Blackburn with a back injury, is a "major doubt'' for tonight's game.
Dyer, forced to pull out of the England squad for the Euro 2004 qualifier with Macedonia a week ago, was outstanding in Turin where he operated in a free role behind skipper Alan Shearer.
It was a display which won praise from United's two-goal executioner at the Stadio Delle Alpi, Italy superstar Alessandro Del Piero, who has urged Dyer to choose Juventus as his destination if he ever moves to Serie A.
Dyer will undergo a fitness test this morning, but Robson fears he will have to reckon without him in an "all or nothing'' showdown.
"It's our last chance,'' said Robson. "This game is very significant. It's crucial that we win it. If we get a point, I would think that wouldn't be enough after four games.
"If we lose, the chances are we would have to say goodbye to playing in the next round.
"It's all or nothing, muck and nettles and we're going to give it everything we can. We're going to attack, down the flanks and through the middle.
"If we go out, I don't think the players have failed. We've never looked inferior - we've just been on the wrong side of the margin.
"We lost 2-0 in Kiev, but we were the better side here against Feyenoord and lost 1-0, and Juventus only just had the edge in Turin until Del Piero scored a delicate free-kick.
"Alan Shearer got a goal after that, but Dyer was adjudged offside - who knows if he was?
"Juventus will be relieved that Dyer is doubtful after the way he played there.
"But it's an opportunity for others and we have Lomana LuaLua who, at home, can be a frightening proposition.''
Italian title holders Juventus may be on a roll this season, but they have gone an astonishing 17 Champions' League away games without a win.
Their last triumph on their travels in the competition came in Kiev over four-and-a-half years ago.
Robson admits he is "surprised'' by the statistic and stressed: "If you beat them, you don't have to be afraid of anybody.
"Most top European teams have hardly any weaknesses. Champions' League football is like playing Manchester United or Liverpool every game.
"Teams don't make mistakes in Europe like the mistakes we made at Blackburn on Saturday.''
Many of those mistakes were down to goalkeeper Shay Given, whose place tonight is understood to be under threat from Steve Harper.
Robson blamed the Republic of Ireland international for two of the goals United conceded at Ewood Park.
Newcastle (probable): Given; Griffin, O'Brien, Bramble, Hughes; Solano, Jenas, Speed, Robert; Shearer, LuaLua. Subs (from): Ameobi, Viana, Elliott, Acuna, Kerr, Bernard, Harper (gk).
Juventus (possible): Buffon; Thuram, Iuliano, Ferrara, Birindelli; Zambrotta or Conte, Tacchinardi, Davids; Nedved, Di Vaio, Del Piero.
l Juventus boss Marcello Lippi has promised that his side will take nothing for granted as they look to cement their Champions League status at Newcastle, writes JACK LESLIE.
The Group E leaders are within touching distance of the second round, but Lippi said: ''Even a win will not be automatic qualification so we will not change our approach.
''I don't feel zero points is a realistic reflection of Newcastle's performances. They have not by any means been inferior to the other teams in the group.
''Newcastle have several dangerous players, but top would be Shearer. He is a threat because of the 301 goals, but then there is Dyer, Speed, Solano, Robert, LuaLua, Jenas, and Viana.
