A CAMPAIGN is being launched to inform County Durham carers about a new benefit entitlement.

From October 28, the Government is changing the law to allow carers aged 65 and over to claim invalid care allowance.

Durham Welfare Rights, part of Durham County Council's social services department, is running a campaign to encourage local people to take advantage of the allowance.

It has produced an information leaflet explaining new rules, including that care must be undertaken for 35 hours per week, and involve a disabled person on attendance allowance or disability living allowance at the higher or middle rate. Carers on income support or minimum income guarantee could get an extra £24.80 a week.

Chris Graham, senior welfare rights officer with Durham County Council, said: "It is important carers get advice before making a claim."
