THE supreme champion calf at the All Breeds All Britain Calf Show will be auctioned at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, on Thursday.
The 16-month-old Cloudnine Leduc Cherish is one of a consignment of 87 pedigree Holsteins in the dispersal sale of the Upsall and Cloudnine herds for Rob Dickson and his son and daughter-in-law, Iain and Tammy, to be be conducted by Harrison & Hetherington.
The show, at the National Agricultural Centre, Stoneleigh, was the first of its kind, jointly organised by the leading dairy breed societies and representing Holsteins, Ayrshires, Dairy Shorthorns and Jerseys.
Cloudnine Leduc Cherish is out of Upsall Cherry Pie VG88, now owned by the Ridgefield herd. Her paternal sister Cloudnine Leduc Cherise, out of Upsall Rudolph Cherise VG97, was also first in her class and will be sold in the dispersal.
The Upsall sale, comprising an exceptional collection of young cows, milk heifers and followers, with a great variety of famous families from renowned sires, is the day after the Northern Dairy Expo Show at Borderway and cattle will be on view to coincide with the show.
Cherish won the championship at the North Eastern Calf Show this year, followed by Cherise in reserve place.
The Upsall prefix was first registered 32 years ago and successfully developed for type and production through the foundation of family members Baby, Mae, Roxy, Floss (from the Hunday herd) and Inka Ideal (Ullswater). During the last eight or nine years they reinvested, with the expert involvement of Iain and Tammy Dickson, in outstanding Canadian genetics including the import of Shoremar Cherish Broker VG85 and Youltedene Raider Gremlin EX93.
The show ring has been one of the Dicksons' strongest marketing tools. At the National Holstein Show 2001, Upsall Skychief Gremlin was first four-year-old and reserve supreme champion. At the same event in 2000, Upsall Skychief Gremlin EX93 was reserve junior in-milk champion and reserve exhibitor-bred. Shoremar Cherish Broker has bred two National Calf Show champions: Upsall Raider Cherish EX91 (1997) and Upsall Progress Cherish VG88 (2000).
Catalogues are available from Harrison & Hetherington's pedigree department or can be viewed and downloaded from the web site at www.borderway.com. For further information about the sale contact Alison Millar on 01228 590490.
