A MAMMOTH 50 goals were scored from just seven League Cup games last week as Binchester Hotel and Victoria provided the biggest shocks of the round.

Second Division side Binchester beat First Division side Beehive 6-5 to book a place in the second round of the competition - likewise the Vic, who beat Brandon 3-1.

Two goals from Jason Greenland and one from Martin Longthorne provided Victoria with their passage to the next round - Philip Winter scored Brandon's goal.

"We played really well," said Vic Secretary Craig Armstrong. "We've been playing well for a while now and we seem to be putting a good run of form together.

"We're having a better time of it than last year because we've got a good squad of players now. And when we have a bad game we tend to draw rather than lose, so that's a good sign!

"I think to win a cup and to finish in the top four would be a great season for us, but I don't see why we can't aim for that."

David Leary (2), David Parker (2), Craig Parker and Andrew Williams scored for Binchester Hotel to give them a home win over Beehive. Mark Pattinson (2), David Baldwin and Jonathan Hall scored for the visitors.

Meanwhile, Spennymoor Thorns rammed 12 goals past Green Tree. Lee Atkinson (4), Steve Richardson (2), Michael Oliver (2), Anthony Stewart, Mark Tatham, Julian Jordan and Andrew Richardson did the damage.

"I think they just caught us on a good day," said Thorns manager Dave McWaters. "We gelled together very well and everything seemed to go right on the day."

Peter Boucher scored four goals for Brawns Den to give his side a 7-1 win over Shildon Athletic. Dale Phillips grabbed two and Lee Parkinson also notched, while Paul Gargett netted Shildon's consolation.

A hat-trick by Kevin Gillham gifted Salvins a narrow 4-3 win over Horndale. Daniel Paterson scored the other, with Tony Stebbings, Scott Mason and Wayne Pratt netting for Horndale.

Binchester Social Club beat North Briton 3-2. Sruart Allan (2) and Scott Smith scored for the Social Club, with Dennis Townson and David Teddar scoring for the Brit.

Newton Aycliffe striker David Muir continued his rich vein of scoring form to bag a brace in a 3-0 win over Eldon Lane, with Steve Moran grabbing Aycliffe's other goal.
