Sunderland Tomahawks are still without a point from three matches in English Under-19 North A League following a 7-6 defeat away at Blackburn Thunderhawks.

Blackburn also pointless before this match took the lead in 90 seconds to give them a good start. After eight minutes Sunderland had taken a 3-1 advantage after goals from Matthew Chapman (2) and Michael Allinson.

Blackburn drew level with goals either side of the end of the first period. Twice more Tomahawks went ahead through Adam Carr and Shane Hewitt only for Thunderhawks to be level at 5-5 at 49.44. It was Carr's last Sunderland appearance before joining English Premier League side Isle of Wight Raider and Hewitt scored his first goal at this level.

The home side went ahead with ten minutes to go and at 56.13 Allinson equalised and the winning goal came with 02.07 left. Blackburn were awarded two penalty shots in the final period scoring one of them. Tomahawks netminder Rory Dunn saving the first after he threw his stick to get at the puck and Dunn was beaten after Adam Carr tripped a Blackburn forward.

Whitley Tomahawks picked up two well earned points in English Under-16 North A League at Telford Rockets. Whitley trailed to an eighth minute goal to rally round for a 4-1 victory. Two goals in under a minute in the second period from Ricky Box and Andrew Wile pout Tomahawks 2-1 ahead in the 22nd minute.

Peter Zajac increased the lead at 32.51 and the scoring was completed with two minutes remaining from Tomahawks man of the match Shaun Kippin.

Whitley Mohawks completed a club double when they defeated Telford Tiger Cubs in English Under-14 North A League. Alistair Brummitt gave Mohawks a fourth minute lead but Telford were level ten minutes later. The home aside went 2-1 ahead with an 18th minute strike only for two goals 18 seconds apart in the 22nd minute from Daniel Harris and Jamie Tinsley put Whitley ahead again.

Telford always tough opposition on their own ice equalised a minute later and regained the lead at 32.42. Whitley dug deep and were rewarded with two goals in as many minutes from Nathan Taylor and Tinsley for a 5-4 lead at 39.24.

In the final minute Telford pulled their netminder for an extra forward but backfired as Mark Nicholson fired the puck down the ice into an unguarded net for 6-4 with four seconds to go.

Sunderland Cherokees had a 7-2 win at Blackburn Sparrowhawks in English Under-12 North A League. Cherokees had the advantage of an early lead through Nathan Salem. Jack Watkins and Salem with his second put Cherokees 3-1 ahead at the interval. The home side goal coming late in the period.

Salem completed his hat-trick early in the final period, plus goals from Grant Sharp (2), and Daniel Coffey extended the lead to 7-1. Sparrowhawks added their second at 29.04.

Whitley Bay Squaws won their first Women's Division One North game of the season with an 8-2 victory over Nottingham Vipers at Hillheads. Sarah Barnett gave Squaws a fifth minute lead which was doubled at 22.45 through Sarah Christie. Christie scord twice for her hat trick in the middle period for a 4-0 advantage. The final session brought Squaws 8-0 ahead as Charlotte Willey, Helen Hughes and Christie (2) all found the target.

Karen Lockey in the Whitley net was beaten twice in the 44th minute for Nottingham's consolation goals.

English National Hockey League North

Billingham Bombers playing their opening home match of the season at refurbished Forum Ice Arena lost their 100 per cent record to arch rivals Whitley Warriors. Bombers had an off day and did not play up to their capabilities despite Martin Lewis giving them the lead after 25 minutes.

Whitley, after a four game losing streak equalised through Paul Graham four minutes from the end of the middle period. With ten minutes to go Bryan Dunn put Whitley ahead and the win was wrapped up with two goals in the final minute from Andrew Carter and Andrew Tindale.

Bombers scorers: Martin Lewis 1+0; Scott Ward 0+1.

Warriors scorers: Paul Graham, Andrew Carter and Andrew Tindale 1+1; Bryan Dunn 1+0; Lee Baxter and Daniel Good 0+1.

Whitley entertained Kingston Jets in English Premier League Cup action at Hillheads on Sunday and went down 4-5. Good and Bobby Bradley gave Warriors a 2-0 first period lead and Carter added a third at 30.49.

Kingston replied only for Lee Baxter to restore the three goal lead at 36.09.

The visitors cut the deficit shortly before the end of the second period. Three without reply in the third, the winner on 53.49 gave Kingston victory.
