Mick Tait couldn't have asked for a better start than Saturday's 4-0 demolition of Exeter City, although it will take more than one game to convince Darlington chairman George Reynolds that Tait is the man for the manager's job.
The former Hartlepool boss has made no secret of his desire to take over the reins on a permanent basis, but stressed he'll be taking each game as it comes.
"The chairman said he'd give me a few games to prove myself," said Tait.
"I don't think he will give me the job after one game but we'll see how it goes.
"I did enjoy the game. The players enjoyed it and we got a great result."
However Tait is keeping his feet firmly on the ground, refusing to get too carried away after just one game in charge.
"Things can change from match to match can't they?
"Hopefully the players will continue to give as much effort as they have today."
Skipper Craig Liddle revealed Tait has the full backing of the squad in his bid to succeed Tommy Taylor.
"The lads are delighted Mick's got the job," said Liddle
"I think the performance showed how much the lads are behind Mick.
"I think it was important we got the three points and every one of the lads were magnificent."
Liddle's decision to play despite a thigh injury hardly came as a surprise to those who know just how commited the captain is, although Liddle admitted the news didn't go down so well with his family!
"Obviously my family wasn't too happy about me playing because it was a big risk. But it's a risk that's worked out for us," said Liddle.
The former Middlesbrough defender came through unscathed and even managed to get on the scoresheet - something he doesn't expect to do too often this season.
"I normally get two a season so that could be it now!"
Darlington have been drawn away to Wrexham in the first round of the FA Cup. The tie will be played on November 16.
* The Darlington Supporters Trust have arranged a fans' forum to be held at the Iron Horse, Newton Aycliffe, tonight (7.30) to be attended by Luke Raine, while Mick Tait and Craig Liddle have also been invited, although their presence has not yet been confirmed.
