POLICE are stepping up patrols to combat rising complaints of anti-social behaviour.
Gangs of teenagers are said to be intimidating residents in the Derwent Walk and Queens Road areas of Blackhill, Consett, and Annfield Plain.
Detective Sergeant Dave Scott, of Consett CID, said: "We are increasing patrols in those problem areas.
"Some of the behaviour of some of the kids is not acceptable and will be dealt with.
"While hanging around in large gangs is not illegal, it is intimidating for some residents, especially after dark."
The force is working with other agencies to try to provide evening activities to keep the youngsters off the streets. Det Sgt Scott pleaded with residents to be patient while this is set up.
Anyone experiencing problems with nuisance should contact Sergeant Andy McConnell, at Stanley, on (01207) 232144, or Sgt Peter Dawson at Consett on 504204.
