NEW-LOOK mobile libraries have taken to the road in North Yorkshire.

The first port of call for the service was the village of Thornton-le-Clay, near Malton.

Young Bethany Shipley was among the first of many visitors welcomed by mobile driver Liz Gibson to browse through the wide range of books, videos, and story tapes available. The libraries make a total of 1,970 stops in remote communities during a three-week cycle.

The county council's executive member for libraries, John Dennis, said: "We have received positive feedback on the new mobile library designs and the increased stock that is now available to users. The county council's library staff have worked in partnership with the rural communities served by the mobile libraries to ensure they have regular access to county council services. We are even piloting mobile library evening stops in some areas which we would hope to continue if they prove popular."
