A SCHEME to illuminate the top of Ripon's Victorian clock tower with high-powered lighting has been backed by planners.
Councillors voted unanimously to support the application by Harrogate Borough Council to light up the top of the tower at the junction of North Road and Palace Road. Members of Ripon area planning committee agreed that the application should be sent for a final decision to Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott, who is also the secretary of state responsible for planning issues. The tower, which is a listed building, was erected in 1897 to mark the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria. Mr Prescott's approval is needed because of the tower's listed status.
