A NEW building to house Sure Start staff in Darlington has been approved.
At a council planning committee, members granted permission for the local authority to erect a building on a car park in the grounds of Darlington's railway museum.
The two-storey offices, which will look like a traditional railway building, will incorporate a nursery and a focal point for Sure Start activities.
Sure Start staff, who have projects operating in the North Road, Branksome and Bank Top areas of the town, are occupying a nearby property at 2 McNay Street.
English Heritage and the Council for the Protection of Rural England both objected to the proposal, concerned that the building would detract from the historic site.
However, members felt that its traditional railway design would blend in with the museum and enhance the area.
