Most burglaries are carried out by the opportunist and can be prevented. In one in five cases, homes have been left insecure.
Lancelot offers the following advice:
* Lock windows and doors, even when at home. You will feel safe and be safe.
* All windows should have key operated window locks.
* Never leave keys in doors or window locks.
* Check doors are robust and fitted with a BS 3621 mortice deadlock. If they are not strong and safe, neither is your home.
* Ensure you postcode your valuables using an ultra-violet marking pen. Write your postcode followed by your house number.
* Look to prioritise. Cost may be an issue. Secure the rear and side of your home first.
* Organise your neighbours. Neighbourhood Watch is a must, it is free, it works and it can entitle you to reduced home insurance premiums.
* Take responsibility - act now.
