PLANS to allow a taxi office to open two hours earlier look likely to be approved, despite objections from residents.
Members of Stockton Borough Council's planning committee will meet today to discuss plans by Station Taxis, at Eaglescliffe Station, to change its opening time from 8am to 6am.
The first train into the station arrives at 6.06am, and the application has been lodged to address the problems faced by many commuters who need transport at that time of the morning.
Residents living near the office have objected to the proposals because they say the level of noise in the area will increase. There was also concern the opening hours would be breached. However, councillors have been asked to approve the plans, and a report to the council said: "The first train arrives at 6.06am and the current hours of operation for the taxi office are from 8am.
"It would appear reasonable to allow taxis to pick up early morning passengers at the station and help provide a joined up transport provision.
"At that time in the morning there will be other deliveries taking place as well as people starting their daily routine and on their way to and from the amenity of surrounding properties.
"The office will still be subject to a condition to close during the night to avoid excessive noise and disturbance during those hours."
