Heroin with a street value of £60,000 was recovered after a raid on a house in Billingham.

Stockton Drugs Unit, assisted by a dogs handler, carried out the search at an address in the town's Mendip Road area on Thursday night.

A 40-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of possession of heroin with intent to supply. They are currently in custody.

Drugs and other items recovered are to be sent away for forensic tests.

Sergeant Tony Rock of Stockton's Drug Unit said: "This was a very successful operation resulting in the recovery of enough heroin to produce 6,000 street deals.

"This will obviously cause major disruption to the supply of heroin in this area. we are determine to target dealers of heroin and crack cocaine and will not tolerate anybody dealing in these addictive and dangerous drugs.

"The public can rest assured we will continue to mount similar operations in the near future."
