Darlington couple Fred and Josie Kirby are calling time at their off-licence and retiring after 24 years in the business.
Fred, 55, and Josie, 49, have been running the Raft Off-Licence, in Yarm Road, Darlington, since 1978.
But they have now decided to spend more time relaxing in the garden and with their family.
Mr Kirby said: "It is a young man's game, but I will miss the business. The customers have become our friends and we will still be popping around to see them from time to time.
"I'll have more time now for the gardening and for spoiling our grand-daughter, Abigail, who is eight."
Mrs Kirby is also looking forward to retirement.
She said: "After 24 years of working seven days a week I am looking forward to doing absolutely nothing now except relaxing in our bungalow. We have had dozens of cards wishing us well. It was quite hard to get our job done yesterday because everyone wanted to stop for a chat and say good luck."
Mr and Mrs Kirby wished all the best to new owner Mrs Julie Dee yesterday.
