A COUPLE have a 999 operator to thank for saving their lives after they were trapped in the bedroom of their home when a fire broke out downstairs.
The 38-year-old man and his partner from Thirsk, North Yorkshire, were woken by the sound of a mirror breaking in the heat of the blaze.
Realising they were trapped by flames and smoke, the couple dialled 999.
Although they were both extremely agitated, operator Emma Allison remained calm, passing on survival tips which proved sufficient to keep them safe until fire crews arrived.
"I am very proud of the professionalism displayed by Emma,'' said Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Nigel Hutchinson yesterday.
"Her quick thinking ensured this incident had a happy ending; without it, I am certain we would be looking at a tragedy,'' he said.
