HOUSEHOLDERS and businesses across the North-East are being warned against using cowboy builders after the recent bad weather left properties damaged and in need of substantial repair.
National Federation of Builders (NFB) officials issued the alert after areas were hit by winds in excess of 90mph and heavy rain, leaving people with water and storm damage to their homes.
The federation, the industry's leading and longest-established trade organisation, is urging victims to take extreme care when selecting a builder to repair damage.
Paul Kendrick, spokesman for the NFB, said: "Cowboy builders often crawl out of the woodwork when disaster strikes, preying on vulnerable and unsuspecting people.
"Customers wishing to avoid further heartache should ensure they appoint a reputable builder or contractor and not a rogue operator.
"If in doubt, we would advise people to call their local office of the National Federation of Builders and we will point you in the direction of a vetted, reputable builder in your area."
The federation can be contacted on (0207) 6085150.
