A police officer who was struck by a car involved in a separate alleged hit and run was today praised for clinging to the vehicle as it sped away.
The unnamed officer was knocked down by a fleeing Ford Mondeo driver who had been pulled over at about 8pm yesterday in West Denton, Newcastle upon Tyne.
The policeman hung on the back of the car but lost his grip when it pulled away sharply.
The driver was arrested nearby as well as a passenger who had tried to flee before the incident.
Both were today helping police with inquiries.
Police were alerted earlier last night when a pedestrian was struck by a car outside the Three Mile Inn in Gosforth, Newcastle, although no victim has yet come forward.
The badly shaken officer, in his 30s, was today recovering at home and was not thought to be seriously injured.
Superintendent John Graham said today: ''This incident highlights the bravery officers show when carrying out their duties.''
