A GROUP of students from a County Durham college are to sample life on the ocean wave with the Royal Navy.
The team of ten from the pre-uniformed and public services course at East Durham and Houghall College are to join the crew of HMS Example tomorrow as they set sail down the River Tyne and into the North Sea.
HMS Example is one of 16 fast patrol boats, also known as P200s, in service with the Royal Navy and is part of the Northumbrian University Royal Naval Unit, based at HMS Calliope, on the Gateshead Quayside.
The ship's crew of five, led by Commanding Officer Lieutenant James Gould, regularly welcomes aboard students from across the region to offer them a chance to find out more about today's modern navy.
Lt Gould said: "Our main role is to give undergraduates experience of what Royal Navy life is like and to help the public get a better understanding of the things we do."
