SPECIALIST fire crews were called out to a car submerged in the River Skerne at Darlington yesterday.
The vehicle was seen in the river between Albert Road and John Street by police around noon.
Two fire appliances from Darlington were called out, plus an aerial platform and rescue boats from Bishop Auckland and a rescue crew from Peterlee.
Darlington Fire Station Officer Peter Matthews said: "When we got there all we could see was the roof. A couple of guys from Bishop Auckland wearing dry suits got into the car via the sunroof to make sure no one was in there."
It is believed the car was driven into the water further up the river by car thieves.
An operation to recover it was due to begin last night.
