THE ANNUAL poppy appeal in Durham is receiving cross-community support, headed by the city Mayor.

Coun Eileen Rochford was joined by leaders of community groups and institutions from across the city at the launch of the Royal British Legion's 2002 appeal.

She has already sent out a request to Durham's shops, businesses and offices to allow collecting boxes to be placed in their premises.

Coun Rochford asked members of the public not to pass by the boxes without making a donation, no matter how small.

The appeal provides funds for residential and convalescent homes, assists widows to visit overseas graves, offers holidays for the severely disabled, and training for ex-service people with disabilities, while also providing them with sheltered employment.

A Remembrance service will be held at Durham Cathedral on Sunday at 10.15am, followed by a parade to the market place where Lt. Col Duncan Hopkins, commanding officer Tyne Tees Regiment, will take the salute.

On Monday, two minutes silence will be observed at the town hall steps.
