WORK to turn a former stationers' shop in Darlington into a department store is likely to begin before Christmas, developers have said.

Terrace Hill confirmed that a major national retailer was expected to exchange contracts on the former Dressers shop, in High Row, in Darlington town centre, in the next few weeks.

"There is a strong possibility that work will begin on the new store before Christmas," said a spokesman.

"All I can say is that it will be a large departmental store and we are negotiating exchange of contracts with a national multiple retailer."

Fashion retailer Next confirmed earlier this year that it was in talks with Terrace Hill but refused to say whether it was definitely moving to the High Row site.
