TWO disabled canoeists aim to make a real splash for charity.
Stuart Vallely, of Middlesbrough, and Stuart Carter, of Guisborough, are hoping a 60 mile paddle up and down the River Tees will have raised £1,000 for BBC Children in Need.
The duo's attempt may also get into the Guinness Book of Records as the first marathon of its type undertaken by disabled people.
They had planned to paddle the 60 miles over two consecutive days, but fierce squalls forced them to postpone the second leg to several days later. Not content with that, the two Stuarts want to paddle across the Channel, raising money for local charities. The two have previously won gold medals competing against teams from all over Europe in the Disabled European Championships in Italy, last year. Mr Vallely, 42, said: "A lot of disabled people don't get the chance to show what they can do. Some look down on disabled people, which is wrong.''
