NEW Sheffield Wednesday boss Chris Turner is set to resurrect a move for Sunderland's out of favour defender Stanislav Varga.
Centre-back Varga was tracked by former Owls' boss Terry Yorath before he left his post earlier this month.
And it is understood that ex-Hartlepool United number one Turner is keen to make the Slovakian international his first signing since taking over at Hillsborough last week.
Turner has already indicated he wants to sign a defender and a centre-midfielder before the weekend, and he is ready to turn to Varga to solve his defensive nightmare.
The 30-year-old, who arrived on Wearside in a £650,000 deal in 2000, is keen to get his career up and running again after failing to command a regular first team place at Sunderland.
Cash-strapped Wednesday had originally hoped to snap up Sunderland teammate Emerson Thome - a former favourite in South Yorkshire.
But a loan move for the Brazilian, who is hoping to rebuild his career after a serious knee injury, collapsed when the two clubs could not reach agreement over his hefty Premiership salary.
However, Varga's situation is different and Wednesday are understood to be exploring the prospect of Sunderland paying a percentage of the player's wage.
The former Slovan Bratislava star has not started a game in the English top-flight since February and he spent a loan spell at West Brom last season when he made four appearances.
Meanwhile, Sunderland striker Tore Andre Flo is confident he can fill the void left by retired Niall Quinn.
Flo and strike partner Kevin Phillips both scored against Tottenham on Saturday and the Norwegian his convinced there is more to come from the pair.
"Everyone knows how well Kevin and Niall did at Sunderland and I'm hoping we can be a success," said the club's record buy, who is set to keep his place at Liverpool on Sunday.
"People were very, very happy that Kevin got his goal against Spurs. He's been injured a lot and he's come back and scored and we all know he's such a great player.
"He does it in training every day and finally now he has done it in a match this season and I expect more. He's good to play alongside.
"Hopefully we can keep on scoring goals. I'm pretty sure we can build on it.
