A VERDICT of misadventure has been recorded over the death of a pensioner who died in hospital after an operation.

In announcing his verdict into the death of John Goodall, Cleveland deputy coroner Gordon Hetherington said: "That does not mean something improper has occurred. It is not criticism of the treatment he was given.''

William Corbett, a consultant at the James Cook Hospital, Middlesbrough, where the 74-year-old died, told an inquest in Middlesbrough: "We did everything we could within our power.''

The inquest heard that Mr Goodall, of Wakefield Road, Middlesbrough, returned to England from his new home in Spain for treatment for bowel cancer.

Mr Goodall had a successful operation, but suffered a catalogue of complications, including a suspected heart attack, a chest infection, a stomach ulcer, respiratory problems and bronchial pneumonia, all fuelled by underlying chest problems he already had.

Mr Hetherington said Mr Goodall was unable to cope with treatments for the complications
