ROGUE taxi drivers could be out in force over Christmas - that is the warning from Trading Standards officers in Stockton.
With an increase in demand for taxis over the festive period, there is often an increase in unofficial drivers vying for trade.
To counter rogue drivers, officers have produced a leaflet which provides advice on getting home safely and on how to recognise licensed drivers and vehicles.
This is available from the Consumer Advice Centre, in Stockton Central Library, or the Trading Standards office in Church Road, Stockton.
David Kitching, Stockton's Trading Standards manager, said: "People take risks over Christmas and New Year because they're having a good time and may drop their guard.
"They often get in the nearest car but they should really think in advance about who they are getting in the car with.
"Getting into unlicensed vehicles and being driven by unlicensed drivers is taking a risk and people could be putting themselves in an extremely dangerous situation."
Mr Kitching also issued a warning to taxi firms not to take on unlicensed drivers to help with extra demand, adding that spot checks will be carried out on firms.
