AN east Cleveland community has been branded The Forgotten Village by a local politician.

Councillor Steve Kay claims Carlin How, near Guisborough, appears on few maps and is not signposted.

The leader of Redcar and Cleveland Council's independent group said he had been contacted by people worried about the implications.

"The people of Carlin How believe they are forgotten by the council,'' he said. "Why can't the community's existence at least be recognised by a few simple signs, especially at strategic points along the A173 and A174?"

However, the authority's environment spokesman, Councillor Brian Hogg, said he did not accept the arguement that the village had been forgotten, arguing that two new Carlin How signposts had been erected recently.

He added that villages on a main road were not signposted the same way as villages in outlying areas.
