COUNCIL chiefs have pledged to continue improving sports facilities after facing criticism in an independent report.

The condition of some of Darlington Borough Council's outdoor sports facilities - particularly children's play areas - were described as poor by the Audit Commission last month.

Inspectors said that while residents were generally satisfied with the council's sports service, some facilities were lacking.

But Darlington council's cabinet member for leisure services, Councillor Dorothy Long, pointed to the commission's conclusion that there were "promising prospects for improvement".

She told a cabinet meeting: "The inspection did identify shortcomings, many of which have already been addressed. We are making progress with children's play areas."

In their report, inspectors advised that services should be promoted consistently and clear targets to increase customer numbers should be developed.

Overall, the commission awarded the service two stars, adding it did have a broad range of accessible indoor and outdoor sports.

It also described facilities at the Dolphin Centre, Stressholme Golf Course and the Eastbourne Sports Complex as good.
