Sunderland Cherokees played two games in the English Under-12 North A League at the weekend winning one and losing one.

Victory came on Sunday with a 4-1 win over Blackburn Sparrowhawks. Jake Shanks gave Cherokees the lead after nine minutes, Grant Sharp and Nathan Salem struck 14 seconds apart in the 18th minute to increase the lead to 3-0.

Blackburn cut the deficit with their lone reply at 25.29 and four minutes later Salem's second goal of the game gave Cherokees victory.

The next day Cherokees visited Nottingham Tigers and went down 10-2. Tigers went 3-0 ahead after six minutes and had taken a 7-0 lead before Salem scored Cherokees' opening goal at 18.54. Salem's second came on the powerplay in the 25th minute. Nottingham added another three to complete the scoring.

Whitley Arrows, also in the Under-12 North A League action, had a 4-1 win over Altrincham Spitfires at Hillheads. Bobby Mole gave Arrows an 11 seconds lead. Callum Watson netted a second with only two minutes gone. Liam Brown was on hand for a third before Spitfires got on the scoresheet at 25.18.

Watson's second on the powerplay three minutes later made certain of victory.

In the Under-12 North B League Billingham Pumas suffered a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Grimsby Ghosts. Pumas' young side found the going tough and conceded their first goal at 01.28.

Grimsby were 5-0 ahead when Robert Heale reduced the deficit with Pumas first game at 22.15 on the powerplay. Ghosts struck another two before Pumas captain Andy Finn hit their second goal.

Sunderland Commanches had had two home games in the English Under-14 North A League, but they suffered mixed fortunes. On Saturday Blackburn Sparrowhawks were in the North-East and returned home with both points from a 3-1 victory.

Blackburn led 2-0 when Daniel Murdy was on hand for Commanches strike at 26.08. Pressing forward caught out with Blackburn's third decisive goal.

Billingham Falcons were Commanches' visitors on Sunday and put up a very brave performance before going down 15-1.

Murdy and Callum Pattison gave Commanches a 2-0 first period lead. Martin Thrumble, Pattison and Murdy (2) increased the lead to 6-0 after two periods.

The tired legs of Falcons young legs began to take its toll and Commanches' Thrumble, Pattison and Salem each completed hat-tricks. Karl Nelson (2) and Jake Roberts completed the scoring.

A Commanches B squad hosted Blackburn Harriers in an Under-14 challenge match. Grant Sharp and Daniel Coffey put the home side 2-0 ahead. Harriers came back to lead 3-2 at 22.09. Coffey, Vicky Wilson, Jake Roberts, Ross Hanlon took Commanches to a 6-4 win.

Sunderland Arrows had an 11-1 win in the English Under-16 North B League at Birmingham Rockets. Jeremy Lundin, Jamie Smithson, Dean Holland and Chris Hayes put Arrows 4-0 ahead at the first interval. Birmingham netted their consolation goal in the middle period which Arrows moved 9-1 ahead. Richard Westgarth and Callum Hewitt completed the scoring in the final period.

Billingham Bears concede two goals in the 13th minutes at home to Kingston Crunch in the Under-16 North A League. James Udell reduced the deficit with the only goal of the middle session.

Bears without Liam Telfer and Steven Pritchard due to suspensions could not snatch an equaliser only for Kingston to restore their two-goal lead at 38.33.

Sunderland Scorpions suffered their first loss in women's premier league this season 3-2 at Kingston Duiamonds. Claire Oldfield and Sara Clare gave scorpions a 2-0 lead at 28.36.

Two minutes later it was all square and Diamonds winner came with 40 seconds left on the powerplay.

English National Hockey League North

Sunderland Chiefs had a successful weekend defeating both teams that were below them in the league. Bradford Bulldogs came to Telewest Arena on Saturday and took a sixth minute lead. By the end of the first period Michael Allinson (2) and John Miller had given Chiefs a 3-1 lead. Shaun Black (2), Allinson and Matthew Chapman struck in the second period after Bulldogs scored early in the period.

Allinson scored his fourth at 56.41 as Chiefs won 8-3.

Grimsby Buffaloes came North with just eight skaters and did well to keep Chiefs to 11-1 victors. Paul Rolfe, Miller, Chapman (2) and Allinson were on target in the first period for a 5-0 advantage. It was doubled in the second session as Graeme Johnson, Jon Heslop (2), Adam Hendry and Black scored.

Buffaloes' consolation goal came on 54.37 and Rolfe completed the scoring in the final minute.

John Miller and Graeme Johnson both made their debuts at the weekend and made worthy contributions.

All of Chiefs' four netminders, Iain Hanson, Rory Dunn, John Worrall and Chris McKay played in the two matches.

Billingham Bombers lost 4-3 to Kingston Jets at Hull ice arena. Jets scored twice in the sixth minute before Martin Lewis opened Bombers' account at 15.40.

Lewis tucked away his second at 29.07 after Jets had gone 3-1 ahead. Paul Windridge equalised on the powerplay 20 seconds from the end of the middle period. Kingston's winner came in the 49th minute.

Bombers had a goal disallowed for a player being in the crease in the second period.

Sheffield Scimitars with five players suspended were still too strong for Whitley Warriors in the Northern Cup match in Sheffield. Paul Graham put Warriors ahead at 09.21 and after Sheffield equalised Kevin Bucas and Andrew Tindale made it 3-2 in Whitley's favour.

Two goals in the final minute of the second and another two minutes into the third put the home side 5-3 ahead. Graham grabbed his second at 47.24 before Sheffield made sure with two further goals.
