It was a tough call on the Tees at Yarm during the 4th round of the North-East Winter League, writes Jeff Herbert.

Extra water and a constant flow of leaves tested the 13 teams of ten anglers.

Undeterred, individual winner Cleveland Angling Centre's Darren Campbell got to grips with the conditions and gave a fine performance recording 15.1.0.

Fishing permanent peg 168 in the reed beds groundbait feeder with worm and maggot into mid river connected with three skimmers and two chubs but mainstay proved over 7.0.0 of small roach.

In runner up spot Lee McInnes of Stokesley drew three above Eaglescliffe Golfcourse and found groundbait feeder and lobworm most effective taking five skimmers and four roach to make up 14.1.0 at the scales followed by Mark Trattles of Newman Scott Blue 10.7.0.

Others in the frame: B Percival (Newman Scott Red) 5.11.0 P Nicholson (Billingham Tackle Box) 5.8.0 and G Hall (Stokesley) 5.1.0.

Newman Scott Reds totalled 88 points for team glory on the day but with two matches to go Newman Scott Blue and Cleveland Angling Centre have opened up a gap of four points sharing first place on nine points.

League to date: jt 1 Newman Scott Blue & Cleveland Angling Centre 9 pts; 3 Shimano Quaker MG 13; 4 Newman Scott Red 17; 5 Dick Clegg Metro 20; 6 Yarm Flynns 30.

Meanwhile on the Croft to Coniscliffe reaches of the Tees grayling showed up in numbers and decided the top five places for the Darlington Brown Trout Open from a river carrying 15" extra.

Darlington's Andy Broomhead finished in front on 7.13.0. Tackling his swim on the stickfloat and red maggot off the run in to Manfield Scar at Low Coniscliffe 22 fish of various sizes obliged.

The top of the Hud stream brought nearest rival fellow Darlington rod Dave Nicholson who used similar tactics for 6.15.0 hotly pursued by Darlington's Bobby Trees 6.10.0.

The rearranged Ouse Championships went ahead but on this occasion the 63 hopefuls were greeted by 5ft of coloured water on the Beningbrough Park down to Poppleton match length and there was little chance of big weights.

All it took was one fish, a single barbel of 7.7.0, to put the conclusion beyond doubt. Tim Harrison of Anglers World lifted the coveted title off the roots peg upstream of the Niddmouth legering lobworm to entice the priceless specimen.

Armley's John Cryowksi sat between the big crack willows opposite Church Farm, always a good draw when there's water in, and picked up a bream of 5.2.0 supplemented by two eels and a roach on groundbait feeder and lobworm approach for 6.14.0.

Other results: Middlesbrough AC Anglers Choice Rosebowl on the Middle Swale: 1 P Stainsby (Yarm Flynns) 6.3.0; 2 M Wosika (Leeds) 2.10.0; 3 B Higgins (Pontefract) 1.10.0.

Bradford No1 AA Backhouse Cup River Ure Roecliffe (35 rods): 1 P Atkins (Bradford) 3.4.8; 2 T Holt (Bradford) 0.7.0; 3 A Fox (Bradford) 0.5.0.

Carp Scene

At the Woodlands Carlton Miniott, Curlew Lake hit top form during Saturday's big 93 pegger delivering some of the best nets on the day however the winner proved the exception coming from Partridge Lake.

Graham Dalby of Leeds Lunies on peg 25 recorded an all carp haul of 39.5.0 presenting pole and feeder and alternating between pellet and corn to keep the fish interested.

Top catch on the scoresheet from Curlew came via Diawa Goldthorpe's Martin Leck. Staked on peg 19, a combination of maggot and corn brought numbers of small carp as Martin poled his way to 37.2.0 followed by Kevin Hill (Sensas Garbolino) 32.9.0 (peg 23 ); John Chapman Keenets North West 30.7.0 (peg 22) & Mark Deaton Spenborough 29.9.0 (peg 3).

Snaith's John Kenning enjoyed a great midweek session at the Oaks Sessay when he slipped the net under a substantial mirror carp. The magnificent specimen weighed in at 12.0.0 as pole and maggot at 11m added smaller carp to make for 45.8.0 off peg 62A on Maple Lake.

Carp enthusiast Elton Tackle's Dean Smith had nothing bigger than 3.0.0 and dropped into second place with 36.4.0 on the maggot out to 13m.

Then Tri Cast Whizzo's John Allerton topped Sunday's Oaks match thanks to another quality fish this time a 7.0.0 common carp.

John offering maggot off peg 63 pushed the pole out to ten and 13m accumulating all carp for a level 37.0.0 as the rest in the frame hovered between 25 and 30.0.0 nets.

Sections weights were tight and runner up Andy May opting for both maggot and caster bagged 30.14.0. Fishing between long and short pole he managed to hold off next best by 4ozs from peg 47.

There's been some big fish caught at Redworth's Jubilee Lakes Darlington.

Les Stockdale of Yarm caught the biggest fish, a rainbow of 15.7.0, which fell to a grizzle zonker during a week that included others of 14.4.0 and 13.10.0. Rod average 2.8.
