Spennymoor are now the favourites for the Durham Challenge Cup after they came from behind to beat Sunderland 2-1 on Wednesday night.
A young side looked as if they would be going through after they created several chances in the first half, but Moors hit back with two goals inside a minute. Richie Ryan curled a free kick past Adrian Swan to put Sunderland into the lead, but a header from Chris Lynch and a penalty by Anthony lee inside a minute gave Moors a quarter final place.
Manager Tony Lee said: "We got a little bit of a chasing in the first half from them, but after they scored, we came on strong.
"I think it says a lot for our players that they improved as the second half went on against a team which is full time."
Gateshead joined Moors in the next round after they came from behind to win 3-1 at Washington.
Blyth Spartans are heading for trouble with the FA after their disciplinary problems. Taking all matches into account, Spartans are now into double figures for sendings off this season. The FA is almost certain to impose a fine on them after placing a £5,000 suspended fine last season.
Even though they lost to a penalty at North Ferriby on Tuesday night, Bishop Auckland moved off the bottom of the table on goal difference because Trafford were thumped 6-1 at Alfreton.
