Jimmy Evans of Shotton Palms regained his Championship title when he beat Charlie Donaghy of Tow Law in the Final at Crowtrees by 18 points.
The six qualifiers were split into two groups to play on a round robin basis with one going out of each group, leaving four to play the semi-finals. A series of very close matches ensued with the first producing a very good win for Peter Laverick of the host club when he beat Heppell Hodgson of Tow Law by 11 points. Laverick maintained his good form in the early stages against Donaghy but when he was nine short of victory Donaghy put in a winning 31 break. In the final match of the group, Hodgson never found his true form and was beaten by his teammate.
The first match in the other group brought a very tense finish as Ken Robinson of Witton Gilbert edged ahead of Jimmy Evans of Shotton Palms. However the gap was closed until they reached the point where Robinson needed five points and Evans nine. A slight mistake from Robinson was enough to let Evans in to complete victory. Lawrence Jones of Leeholme then played Evans, but, despite good start, could never match the scoring of his opponent and went down by 24 points. Robinson also proved too strong for Jones with a 19 points victory.
The cross over semi-finals were vastly different with Evans coasting comfortably through against Laverick, whilst Robinson established a big lead against Donaghy and only needed one point to go into the final. However a late recovery by Donaghy, coupled by a mistake from Robinson, took the Tow Law player to the final.
In the final Evans moved into an early lead and showed his superiority by keeping Donaghy out to go on and deservedly repeat his Championship victory.
